Beaufort Historic Site
The Beaufort Historic Site depicts 18th and 19th century life in Beaufort. The two acre site contains six historic buildings that have been authentically restored. The Beaufort Historical Association that owns and operates the site offers guided tours of the historic buildings, narrated tours of the Beaufort historic district above a vintage double decker bus and guided tours of the Old Burying Ground. Maps are also available for self guided walking tours of the historic district and Old Burying Ground. The site is located at the 100 block of Turner Street.
The Old Burying Ground The Old Burying Ground is one of North Carolina's oldest cemeteries and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Deeded to the town in 1731, these hallowed gates encompass the graves of soldiers from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War, star crossed lovers, and privateers. In the shade of a thicket of majestic live oaks, rest over 400 residents who helped shape Beaufort into the town that it is today. Take a self guided tour or stop by the Beaufort Historic Site for a guided tour of the Old Burying Ground.
Hammock House (c.1709) Hammock House, built on a small hill or hammock, is the oldest house in Beaufort and was used as a navigation point on early maps and served as a landmark for ships entering Beaufort. Legend surrounds Hammock House and some believe it is haunted. It's most famous guest was Blackbeard, the pirate. It is told that blackbeard stayed here for a time with one of his wives. When he went back to sea, he had her hung on one of the lve oak trees and buried in the yard. Some say her screams can still be heard when the moon is right. Hammock House is a private residence but can be viewed from the exterior on tours offered by the Beaufort Historic Site.
N.C. Maritime Museum The N.C. Maritime Museum is decicated to preserving the rich maritime history of Coastal North Carolina. Located on Front Street in Beaufort, the museum offers exhibits that feature natural history, maritime history, and our area's coastal cultural heritage. The museum offers over 300 programs each year including lectures, workshops, field trips to coastal habitats, sailing programs, and boat building classes. Across the street from the main museum building is the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center. Here visitors can observe the museums restoration efforts of wooden boats and students participating in the boat building classes. (252) 728-7317
The History Place The History Place is a unique and fascinating museum located in downtown Morehead City. The museum is home to the Carteret County Historical Society and offers interesting exhibits that will bring out the history buff in everyone who visits. The History Place is also home to the Jack Spencer Goodwin Library. The library is an excellent resource for reseach and genealogy. The museum's exhibits includes Carteret County and Native American artifacts, vintage clothing, period furniture, and military memorabilia. The carriage of local Confederate spy Emeline Pigott is also on display. (252) 247-7533
Fort Macon Fort Macon is located just east of Atlantic Beach. Construction of the fort began in 1826 and lasted for 8 years. It was first garrisoned in 1934. Union Forces were in control of the fort for most of the Civil War. Fort Macon was a federal prison for a time and was garrisoned during the Spanish-American War. In 1903, the fort was abandoned. In 1923, Fort Macon was sold to North Carolina and in 1936, it opened as North Carolina's first functioning State Park. The U.S. Army leased the fort from North Carolina and actively manned it during World War II. Today Fort Macon's 385 acres is one of North Carolina's mosted visited state parks and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. (252) 726-3775
N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores On May 19, 2006, the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores reopened after a two year renovation. The expanded 93,000 square foot facility is host to 2,500 freshwater and saltwater creatures that populate the aquarium's 40 new exhibits. The Aquarium takes visitors across North Carolina "from the mountains to the sea." The new exhibits include a mountain waterfall, river otters, Blackbeard's shipwrecked Queen Anne's Revenge, and a 306,000 gallon Living Shipwreck featuring a replica of sunken German U-boats. Cape Lookout The Cape Lookout National Seashores encompasses three undeveloped barrier islands that run from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. North Core Banks, South Core Banks, and Shackleford Banks make up the National Seashore. Many visitoer come to the cape to visit the lighthouse. A beacon on the coast since 1859, the Cape Lookout light contnues to guide boats navigating the treacherous waters of our coast. The light flashes every 15 seconds and can be seen 20 miles out to sea. Other areas of interest on the National Seashores are Portsmouth Village at the north end of North Core Banks and the site of an extinct fishing village, Diamond City on Shackleford Banks. The only inhabitants of these islands are the wild horses on Shackleford Banks. These horses are believed to be the descendents of Spanish Mustangs that swam ashore from Shipwrecks. This area is only accessible by private boat or ferry.
